Dear readers,
This time I selected the
words of American writer
Benjamin Franklin, who wrote
an almanac called POOR
RICHARD’S ALMANAC. It was
published annually from 1732
to 1757, which is proof of
Franklin’s versatility, as he turns
an old proverb or saying into a
maxim that is both appropriate
to his time and expressed in the
language of common people.
SELECTED PROVERBS
“Fish and visitors smell in three days”
“There’ll be sleeping enough in the grave”
“Be ashamed to catch yourself idle”
“The eye of the master will do more work than
both his hands”
“He does not possess wealth, it possesses him”
“Want of care does us more damage than want
of knowledge”
“A Fat Kitchen Makes A Lean Will”
“Many have been ruined by buyng good
pennyworths”
“The worst wheel of the cart makes the most noise”
“If you would know the value of the money, go
and try to borrow some”
“It is hard for an empty bag to stand upright”
“Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will
learn in no other”
English Corner
“Necessity never made a good bargain”
“Three may keep a secret if two of them are dead”
“At twenty years the will reigns; at thirty, the wit;
at forty, the judgement”
