Entrevista comCarlos Suaide
Ricky: Dr. Suaide, was your
father also a physician?
Carlos Suaide:
No, Ricky.
My father, Walter Silva, was a
journalist, a radio announcer,
and amusic producer. He hosted
a radio show, called “O Pickup
do Pica Pau,” which was a very
popular in the 1970s and 80s.
Ricky: Were you raised among
famous Brazilian musicians?
Carlos Suaide:
I was indeed. I was born in 1960
when Bossa nova had just begun. In the 1960s, my
father produced shows for students and hired many
upcoming singers, like Chico Buarque, Milton
Nascimento, Elis Regina and many others, as well
as famous ones such as Antonio Carlos Jobim.
In the 1970s and 80s, these shows continued
and introduced new talents like Renato Teixeira,
Toquinho, Belchior, and Secos e Molhados Group.
Very often my father gathered all of these artists
together at home to organize and rehearse these
shows. I had the great fortune of having close
contact with these people during my childhood
and adolescence.
Ricky: Did you studymusic when you were a boy?
Carlos Suaide:
I started taking guitar lessons when I
was 13, and I haven’t stopped playing since.
Ricky: What does music mean to you today and
how is it possible to dedicate time to music being
such a busy physician?
Carlos Suaide:
Music has always been an
extremely important part of my life, due to my
father’s profession as well as the fact that all of my
family members possess a high level of musicality.
As I like to say, you never feel alone when you can
play an instrument. I always find some time to play
my guitar, either alone or with someone.
Even with my very busy life, which includes lots of
work, lectures, classes, and congresses, I still find
spare time to play music.
Ricky: Does music play the role of a so-called
escape valve that helps relieve the stress of
everyday life?
Does good music bring benefits to our mental
and physical health?
Carlos Suaide:
Recently, we started a band and
we rehearse once a week. These weekly rehearsals
serve as “the best of all therapies.”
It is a time when we can isolate ourselves from
all of our problems and simply relax and enjoy
the moment. My wife, Luciana, who is also a
cardiologist, is the pianist in the band.We frequently
play together and enjoy MPB (musica popular
brasileira), Bossa nova, and other types of music.
As I would also like to say, “A piano, a guitar, one or
two glasses of wine, and goodbye stress!”
On the other hand, when I spend a long time
without playing music, I have a feeling that
something really important is missing within me.
A feeling that something has been left behind!
I have no doubt whatsoever that
music can bring many benefits to
our physical and mental health.
Regards to all.
Thanks Ricky,
Carlos Suaide
