Ricky asks FranciscoFonseca:
What are the controversies about dyslipidemia Guidelines?
The European atherosclerosis
and dyslipidemia Guidelines as
well as the SBC/DA Guidelines
V, and recently the North
American Adult Treatment
Panel (ATP - IV) recommend
effective cholesterol reduction
especially
using
statins,
based on strong evidence
accumulated in the last 20
years.
The European Guidelines advise LDL-C < 70m)
dl for high risk patients.
The Brazilian Guidelines endorsed the same
target, while the ATP – IV recommends reduction
of ≥ 50% for these patients.
Differences may exist when identifying high risk
patients.
All these guidelines agree that this is the
condition of patients with coronary heart disease
or cerebrovascular atherosclerotic disease.

They also recognize the benefits of an effective
therapy for patients with diabetes or severe
hypercholesterolemia,
although,
ATP-IV
considers that the benefits are less established
for chronic renal patients and the ones with
heart failure.
